People are increasingly aware of the importance of good nutrition. They know that what they eat today will have an impact on how they feel tomorrow. And they demand food products that meet their health objectives without sacrificing taste.
Biscuits are an increasingly important part of today's diet. Variously tailored to suit different eating episodes - from breakfast to sports sessions - they are regarded as a good combination of energy and tastiness.
A survey of 110 biscuits associated with a health or nutritional claim, launched on the markets between 1 January 2003 and 18 February 2004, showed four main nutritional claims made for biscuits. They involve sugar or fat content (sugar-free, no sugar added, low fat, etc.); enrichment with minerals and vitamins; improvement in fibre content; and energy availability.
MALTISORB® maltitol also exhibits high-value benefits for consumers, e.g. excellent organoleptic properties, a low glycaemic response and low caloric value (in Europe 2.4 kcal/g as against 4 kcal/g for sucrose).
Depending on overall formulation, biscuits using maltitol are authorized to display a number of claims, from 'no sugar added' to 'sugar free'. Many such biscuits are now available on the markets, especially in the USA, Spain and Italy.
Depending on the recipes, biscuits incorporating NUTRIOSE® are authorized to display label claims on the label such as 'contains Xg of fibre', 'source of fibre', 'rich in fibre', or 'enriched with fibre'. Many such fibre-enriched products are available worldwide.
Another example could be the use of NUTRIOSE® and MALTISORB® for the formulation of biscuits for breakfast, to limit the consequences of hypoglycaemia and ensure effective concentration.
A third example could be the use of both products in a snacking biscuit dedicated to weight-conscious people, which could claim simultaneously 'no sugar added, rich in fibre and calories reduced'.
